The Sustainable Development Fund (SDF) provides financial support for initiatives that will help develop a strong public awareness of the principles of sustainable development and to encourage sustainable practices in Hong Kong.

The minimum amount to be applied for should be not less than $50,000 for each application (except the applications from schools and individuals). No maximum funding amount pre-set.

Both groups (e.g. non-governmental and community organisations, academic and research institutes and schools) and HK residents aged 18 or above are eligible to apply. NGOs can partner with government departments to apply for the fund.

Applicants may submit more than one application at any one time. In the case of multiple applications, priority should be indicated.

SDF will support projects that:

  • Can enhance Hong Kong people’s understanding of sustainable development;
  • Can encourage people to put the concept of sustainable development into practice;
  • Can demonstrate clearly integration of at least two of the aspects of sustainable development (i.e. social harmony, economic development, protection of the environment);
  • Can benefit the local community;

Projects may involve work undertaken outside Hong Kong. One-off events with limited potential for long-term impact would be considered a lower priority.

The Education and Publicity Sub-committee (EPSC) will assess applications based on the recommendations of the SDF Secretariat. Approval of applications for HK$500,000 or above would be subject to the advice of the Sustainable Development Council. Approval of applications for less than HK$500,000 will be subject to the advice of the EPSC.

The deadline for applications for each round (different priority areas will be assigned) can be checked from the SDF website. Application results will normally be released in 6 months.

A one-off lump sum payment will be made to projects with a time-span of less than six months. For projects longer than six months, payment would be made to every three months.

Grant recipients are required to submit a quarterly schedule on planned activities, progress report and final report.
